Welsh Fine Dining

Wales has five restaurants in the Michelin Guide for 2015, plus plenty more that send your taste buds wild. This month we visited Pier 64 in Penarth and Wrights Food Emporium in Carmarthen to experience their take on surf and turf.

Pier_64_Welsh_Chateaubriand.jpgSet amongst the yachts in Penarth Marina, Pier 64 Wine bar and Steakhouse opened in July 2011, as a £1 million development which was designed to blend effortlessly into the setting of rustling sails in the marina. With its beautiful location and wonderful architecture, this restaurant was winning in my mind before we even stepped through the door.

The staff were attentive and polite, never hovering or pushing for extra sales. No matter where you sit in the restaurant you are guaranteed a wonderful view of the Marina. The impressive wine list made it hard to choose, but when we finally decided the Chablis Simonnet-Febvre from Burgundy was crisp and delicious. The waiters give you time and space to enjoy the wine, the view and the company while their award-winning chefs create sumptuous dishes in the visibly modern kitchen. Whether you enjoy tasty salads, succulent steaks or freshly caught local seafood, Pier 64 is a refreshing affordable fine-dining experience.

For our next culinary delight we travelled along the South Wales coastline to Carmarthen. Wright’s Food Emporium is nestled in the beautiful village of Llanarthne, a short drive from the Welsh Botanic Gardens.

Wrights_Food_Emporium_Pork_Belly_Cubano.jpgWalking into their new home within the Golden Grove Arms is like walking into Willie Wonker’s Chocolate Factory for food lovers. Your senses go into overdrive, from the delicious smells meandering their way through the whole building, to the visual spectacle that is your chosen meal. The freshly baked cakes are a work of art! Wright’s Food Emporium uses seasonal local produce where possible, with a wide variety of fruit and vegetables available to purchase as well as served as part of your meal.

Our personal favourites were the Crab Cubano (seasonal), the Pork Belly Cubano and the Wild Garlic and Feta Soup, delicious!
