We couldn't help but wonder about the stories hidden behind Britain's castles, country houses and coaching inns that now serve as historic hotels, so we set off in 2013 to find out!
Over copious coffees and cream teas we have been given access to some fascinating and largely unexplored insights into British history, including their links to our most famed historical figures.
Now it's 2017 and the site has grown to become a top heritage travel influencer! We have been asked to write for magazines and websites and invited on press trips all over the UK.
There are still a great number of hotels and attractions to explore and the idea of expanding beyond the UK is tempting.
We hope the site will inspire you to opt for more than a place to lay your head during your next visit. The historic hotels we feature tend to fall on the expensive side of normal but unlike chain hotels, each one is completely unique and you are likely to leave with some fantastic stories and a great respect for the owners who often throw everything they have into their inherited masterpieces.

What we tend to keep in mind during hotel visits:
- does it have a welcoming atmosphere, designed for leisure travellers
is the food made fresh to order and with local ingredients
has the hotel been modernised to appeal to discerning guests, while retaining qualities of its age and style
We have visited every hotel that features on the site and those that do not feel right to sit alongside the collection are simply not written about.
We always fact check for authenticity, although compete accuracy is sometimes difficult with some stories dating back hundreds of years.
