We couldn't help but wonder about the stories hidden behind Britain's castles, country houses and coaching inns that now serve as historic hotels, so we set off to find out!
Since we began touring the UK in 2013, we've found there is invariably a staff member with encyclopedic knowledge of the place who will gladly talk to us about it.
Over copious coffees and cream teas we have been given access to some fascinating and largely unexplored insights into British history, including their links to our most famed historical figures.
We fact check all the stories for authenticity, although compete accuracy is sometimes difficult with some hotels dating back hundreds of years.
The more we discover about history the more we appreciate our present. The journey continues!
We hope the site will inspire you to opt for more than a place to lay your head during your next visit.Shelley & Lewis
What we tend to keep in mind during hotel visits:
- does it have a welcoming atmosphere, designed for leisure travellers
is the food made fresh to order and with local ingredients
has the hotel been modernised to appeal to discerning guests, while retaining qualities of its age and style
